MLA Prithiviraj appears before HC in false affidavit case

IMPHAL, February 8: Parliamentary secretary Mairembam Prithiviraj Singh today appeared before the High Court of Manipur in connection with the ongoing case pertaining to a charge that the sitting MLA of the 27-Moirang Assembly Constituency had furnished false affidavits in his nomination paper for the election to the current 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly held in January 2012.

The MLA submitted his statement before the single bench of Justice N Koteshwar Singh in connection with Election Petition Case no 1 of 2012 filed by P Sharatchandra Singh who had also contested the election.

The petitioner had charged Prithiviraj of misleading voters by wrongly claiming that he had passed MBA in his election affidavit, even though he had not.

During his court appearance today, the Congress MLA was cross examined by counsel of the petitioner senior advocate N Kumarjit Singh and his junior advocate P Tamphamani Singh based on his statement submitted before the court.

Advocate H Ishwarlal is acting as the counsel of the MLA.

However, since the cross examination cannot be completed during today’s proceeding, the court has fixed another date to continue the case.

Earlier before the cross examination of Prithiviraj, the court had examined petitioner P Sharatchandra and a witness of the case.

It may be mentioned that after his appeal in the High Court was kept pending for long, he had filed a Special leave Petition before the Supreme Court.

In its ruling of the SLP, the SC had directed the HCM to dispose the pending case by the end of February.
