IMPHAL, March 22: The Aimol Tribe Union Manipur (ATUM) has pleaded with the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to protect the indigenous minority Aimol from forced conversion by the NSCN (IM).

In a memorandum submitted to the Home Minister, ATUM claimed that Aimol belongs to the Kuki-Chin-Mizo ethnic groups, but, has been facing forced conversion into the Naga fold by NSCN (IM) cadres who are also involved in extortions and killings of innocents.

The memorandum which alleges the NSCN (IM) of killing several individuals, has also said “Therefore, we implore you to understand and first settle the plight of the Aimol people before any possible agreement is reached with NSCN (IM). The crime of the NSCN (IM) should be examined in a proper law court in the country and the perpetrators of the crime must be punished to the satisfaction of all concerns”.

The memorandum of which copies were forwarded to the Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, National Human Rights Commission, AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi, Indo-Naga peace talk interlocutor RN Ravi among others urged the Union Minister to understand the gravity of the situation of the Aimol people and the plight they are subjected to.

Aimol people are suffering terribly from the “terrorism of NSCN (IM)” in 2015, ATUM claimed.

While asserting the Government of India of neglecting the plight of the Aimol tribe, it has further expressed hope that the Union Minister of Home Affairs would address the plights of the tribe in a proper court of law.

The memorandum further pointed out an earlier notice of the MHA (modification order no SRO 2477) dated October 29, 1956 in which the Aimol tribe was listed under the Kuki-Chin-Mizo group in case of Manipur.

In its memorandum, ATUM has also put in a detailed account of serial killings by NSCN (IM) in Aimol Pallel area (Chandel district) during 2015-16.

It alleged that Ts Thongkhogin Haokip, an assistant Hindi teacher of Molnom Junior High School was mercilessly tortured to death at Satu village by two villagers and a NSCN (IM) cadre on February 3, 2016.

On the same day, the militant outfit attacked Molnom village by firing indiscriminately at the village. One villager Lungkhogin Haokip sustained severe injuries on his head and shoulder, the memorandum said.

“While on February 19, 2016 one Lalcha Haokip of Chelhep village was shot dead even after assurance given by ADIG 26 Sector Assam Rifles and CO of 20 Assam Rifles in a joint meeting convened with representatives of NSCN (IM), UKLF, village authority members of Molnom and Aimol village, it said.

Villager authority chairman of Kangsang village Hopson Maring was killed by NSCN (IM) on August 3, 2015. On August 22, 2015 too, NSCN (IM) entered Ngairong village and mercilessly shot dead Manglun Aimol inside his own residence.”

During Ebuthou Lai Haraoba, in the same year, a devotee was killed at Laikoiching near the road block in front of village gate at Satu Aimol village, it said.

Not ended with this, one Letkhothang Aimol from Khodamphai village who was kidnapped is still missing, it said.

“Therefore, we implore you to understand and first settle the plight of the Aimol people before any possible agreement is reached with NSCN (IM). The crime of the NSCN (IM) should be examined in a proper law court in the country and the perpetrators of the crime must be punished to the satisfaction of all concerns,” the memorandum stated.

Whatever agreement proposed with the NSCN (IM) will become the cause of violence and unrest as solution to the Naga problem will be the cause of social and political unrest for the Aimol, the memorandum went on to state while seeking his immediate intervention for peace and harmony besides giving the light of justice to the people.

    My opinion:
    1. Aimol people need to sit down and reason together and decide. STOP BLAMING OTHERS for the dis-unity within Aimol.
    2. Others …. do not interfere. let them decide.
    3. Stop killing.
    4. Help one another. No mater what, we will always live together.
    Thank you.
