Cabinet gives nod to set up State Technical Varsity

IMPHAL, March 28: With the firm objective of improving technical education in the State, a State Cabinet meeting convened today has given approval to set up “The Manipur State Technical University’’.

The meeting held at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat was chaired by CM Ibobi Singh.

Explaining about the meeting, Education and CAF & PD Minister Moirangthem Okendro who is also the government’s spokesperson informed that the Headquarter of the technical university will be based in Imphal.

He maintained that the technical university to be set up is in tandem with the Manipur State Technical University Bill, 2016 passed by the State Assembly.

The government will be requesting the Governor to issue an ordinance to set up the university as soon as possible, he said.

Stating that period of an ordinance is six months, the minister assured that efforts will be made to convert the ordinance into bill in the Assembly before the end of the period.

About the funding pattern for setting up the university, he said that total required fund will be borne by the State government.

However, arrangement will be made to seek financial assistance either from NEC, NLCPR or the Central government, he said.

Okendro said preparation is on to begin session of the technical university from the coming academic session in July.

Temporary building of the university will be at the former building of NIT Manipur at Government Polytechnic at Takyel. Soon, its permanent campus will be constructed in an appropriate place, he elaborated.

The minister went on to say that required fund for constructing administrative building of the university will be sought from NEC after preparing DPR.

He added that students will be able to pursue technical courses including BE, B Tech and M Tech in the university instead of going outside the State to study the courses.
