IMPHAL, February 29: Members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the death of rape victim of Chinikon and family members, today tried to storm in the Manipur Legislative Assembly when the assembly session was going on in full swing this afternoon.
Protestors mostly wowmen folk, bearing placards which says “Hang the rapist to death”, “Give examplarary punishement by hanging the culprit”, “The culprit should not be treated as juvenile”, etc, marched towards the assembly from two sides one from Thangmeiband and another from Chingmeirong.
However, the protestors were stopped by the security forces using barracade.
The protestors coming from Chingmeirong side were barracaded at the western side of the traffic Island of Khongnang Karak while the protestors from Thangmeiband side were barracaded near the Lilasing Khongnangkhong.
Police had a hard time controlling the group of protestors at Lilasing Khongnangkhong as the protestors were persistent to march forward. As a result, police used water canon to subside the agitating crowd.
Speaking to media persons, JAC’s spokesperson, Kamei Tony informed that their objective was to submit a memorandum to draw the attention of the house to pass an act to protect women and children against crime, which is one of their demands.
He said that constituting an enquiry against RIMS for the negligence was another demand besides giving befitting punishment to the culprit.
Later, representatives of the JAC were allowed to submit the memorandum.
It is learnt that the mortal of the victim, has been transferred to JNIMS from RIMS for post mortem.
Meanwhile, BJP National vice-president of Mahila Morcha, A Sharda Devi demanded the government to conduct ossification test on the accused questioning aged of the accused who has been claimed to be just 14 year of age.
Speaking to media persons at RIMS campus A Sharda Devi alleged that the accused rapist is 18 years of age not 14 years as claimed by the family.
Inorder to prove the exact year, ossification test must be conducted at the earliest and produced before the court for trial to bring justice instead of keeping him at the observation home as juvenile.
In this regard a memorandum will be submitted to Governor of Manipur to seek permission to conduct ossification, she said.
A Sharda appealed the people to join hands in the movement cutting across communities to bring an end to such inhumane act against infant/minor girls and women adding that all possible steps will be extended in their struggle to get justice.
It may be mentioned that the six and half years old girl was admitted to Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in critical condition after being raped and caused damage to her private part by the rapist in a resting shed at Chinikon under Bishnupur Police Station on February 15.
Later the victim succumbed to her injury at around 4am on February 28 at RIMS.
