IMPHAL, March 2: In another four to five months, traffic in Imphal will be regulated, Transport minister Dr Kh Ratankumar told the House today.
He said the Transport directorate is at present collecting datas on the increasing vehicle volume in the city.
He was replying to a cut motion raised during the discussion on demand for grant on Transport during the sitting of the House today.
The Transport directorate has been expanded in recent times due to the inland railway project and waterways of Barak River and Loktak Lake, he said.
The minister continued that the MSRTC public transport system was abolished in 2004, which has left a big challenge for the State Transport directorate.
Since, the abolishment of the MSRTC, the public transport system in the city has been undertaken by private societies and associations like canters, buses and authorickshaws and maintaining and controlling all these vehicles is not an easy task, he added.
He said he has taken over the issue of permits for passenger services since 2013, because many a time violence erupts during issue of such permits among the vehicle societies.
He said it will take some time to settle all the issues including identification of parking spaces, route rationalisation, identification of routes through google maps, and for all these data collection is underway.
Regarding the issue of ISBT, the Chief Minister has insisted on sanctioning of money in a time bound manner, he said. He also added that parking of petrol tankers have been shifted to Malom and the repairing of pillars of the ISBT damaged by the recent earthquake will be done soon once the experts submit their reports.
Land for the inter-state bus terminus has been allotted at Sekmai which was inspected together with the local MLA, he said adding that the government has more than the land required by the ministry and the NEC has already approved Rs 15 crores.
As for parking in the market places, it was decided by the cabinet to implement a proper parking rule in Imphal City, he added.
