Grenade explodes inside RIMS compound, none injured

IMPHAL, April 1: Unidentified miscreants lobbed a Chinese hand grenade around 7:15 pm at the official quarter of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences medical superintendent Prof Maishnam Amuba Singh located inside the campus of the institute.

The quarter which has a brick wall around it, is located on the northern side of the road which enters through the Main Gate of the institute.

The grenade exploded in between the barrack of the house guards of the MS and the garage.

Although no one was injured in the blast, three vehicles including a four-wheeler were damaged. A Maruti Sx4 car bearing regd no MN 06/2 6996 parked inside the garage of the MS was damaged. Its tyres were also punctured.

Two other Honda Activa mopeds bearing regd numbers MN 01/ F 7721 and MN 05/B 6366 were also damaged.

The escort team of the MS include five riflemen and a havildar.

A personnel who was on sentry duty at the time of the incident, said since it was time for change of guard they were inside, while two other personnel had gone out to buy vegetables.

There were no injuries in the blast as it happened when no one was present, otherwise there could have been casualties as the area is where they usually stand, he said.

MS prof M Amuba Singh is from Thangmeiband Leiren Hanjaba Leikai and had recently shifted to the quarter.

Meanwhile, personnel of the Lamphel Police and 4 IRB arrived at the scene and took stock of the situation.
