IMPHAL, April 12: The Manipur Students’ Community of the Jawaharlal Nehru University has condemned the ‘barbaric’ act of violence in the wake of assault on Muslim students allegedly by Meitei community on March 25 at Iram Siphai and similar incident on April 7.

A release of the student community has appealed to all the individuals, civil society organisations, political parties, students’ organisations, Human Rights activists, Meira Paibis and other social organisations to take utmost effort in stabilising the situation and to see that the government undertake appropriate actions against all culprits.

Further it appealed the government and authorities concerned to compensate the families of the deceased victims and extend all possible assistance to those injured in the incident. Coming down heavily against the media fraternity, the release has questioned the integrity of news and media fraternity who ‘failed’ to produce an unbiased reportage of the events. “It is no surprising that rumours and social media outburst has hijacked the information sector to aggravate the situation”, it said.

The failure of the Police Department, their insensitivity and inaction on their part to arrest the culprits till date has also given rise to the suspicion that there is a systematic attempt to protect the culprits, it said.

The release continued that meanwhile, rumours of unconfirmed news, hate speeches, insensitive remarks and comments, heated claims and counter-claims have been spreading across the social media. In this regard, the release has appealed to the collective conscience of the people of Manipur to maintain calm and take a rational and measured approach rather than falling trap to mindless mob frenzy.
