ATSUM condemns seeking assent to three bills

IMPHAL (NNN): All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM) has said today it strongly condemned the decision taken by the “All Political Parties” to depute a team of politicians to urge the Union Government to give assent to the three Bills passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly on August 31, 2015.

According to a press communique released by ATSUM Information & Publicity secretary Micah Kamei, it is so senseless that political party leaders are ‘succumbing to the lopsided opinion’ of the majority community without analysing the root cause and the direct impact on the socio-political fluidity of Manipur.

Bulldozing any agenda without taking into consideration the sentiments of the tribal people will never fructify for the simple fact that tribals constitute nearly 42% of the total population and therefore, using brute force and flexing muscles for any social cause is undemocratic in a vast democratic country like India, the union said.

“It is very unfortunate that due to lack of farsightedness and wisdom of our legislators, the three anti-tribal Bills were passed without referring to the Hill Areas Committee (HAC),” it said.

The union said the mayhem and destruction caused to human lives and properties before and after and for and against the bills testifies that the two ‘combating community’ will be on the run at war footing to fulfil one’s desired wishes.

The irreparable damages done to the tribals are colossal and with the nine tribal martyrs still lying at the morgue in Churachandpur district, it is not congenial for political parties to campaign in favour of the Bills, ATSUM said.

The union said it is also worth mentioning that the three bills passed by the Manipur Legislative Assembly is ‘unconstitutional’ as the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of Business had been deliberately violated by the honourable members of the House.

Hence, it said, it would be rather more appropriate for legislators to pressurise the Union Government to fulfil the charter of demands of various stake holders instead of inviting more maladies.
