Swift action by State Fire Service Department prevented outbreak of a major fire in the heart of Imphal today at around 5.30 pm.
According to information culled from the spot, fire reportedly broke out inside an engine oil and mobile godown at Dharamsala when a worker left a lighted candle in the godown after getting some stuff.
The godown is owned by one Satish Jain (24) s/o Sunil Jain, presently staying at Paona bazar. It is located some few meters from City PS and the building is owned by Mahabir Searaogi s/o Mahabir.
Dwellers of the building ran amok as the fire broke out inside the godown. Soon after, personnel of City Police Station rushed to the spot to prevent casualties and tried to put off the fire.
Some old stock fire crackers kept inside the godown also burst during the fire.
Timely arrival of State police and Fire Service personnel prevented major damage. Two fire tender vehicles were deployed to douse the fire.
Khumanthem Chandramani, Director of State Fire service rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident a grocery shop was reduced to ashes at Khoijuman Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur district in the morning of May 14. The cause of the fire is still not known. Properties worth Rs 4 lakh were estimated to be lost in the fire. The shop is owned by one Thiyam Pete.
Fire services personnel prevented the spread of the fire to the Cooperative Society building which is located adjacent to the shop.
