Impromptu bandh catches many unaware

IMPHAL, May 11: The sudden and unannounced 10-hour bandh imposed on Uripok-Kangchup road inconvenienced the public today.
E-Front-__-BandThe bandh was clamped by Uripok locals demanding action against the police personnel who were involved in thrashing Tourangbam Taruni of Uripok Gopalji Leirak on May 8 night.
Normal life was largely affected on the road due to the bandh imposed at Sorbon Thingel and a couple of neighbouring localities from 8 am to 6 pm.
At around 7 am today, Uripok locals went on a publicity drive using loud speakers to shut all the shops and business establishments located on the road from 8 am to 6 pm.
From 8 am onwards, the locals blocked the road at different areas burning tyres and placing boulders, pipes, woods and bamboos etc.
Although, no vehicle was allowed to pass these areas, essential service staff and school vans were given free passage during the bandh. A large number of police personnel including women personnel were seen deployed at Sorbon Thingel and nearby localities to thwart unwanted incidents.
On the other hand, many people who came on the road unknowingly about the sudden bandh, expressed concern over imposing such unannounced bandhs.
A man who came to pick up his ward from a school said that the bandh give lots of inconvenience to the public as they did not have any knowledge about it.
Another man said that all the organizations, CSOs and JACs concerned must announce their stirs atleast one day in advance.
No unwanted incident was reported during today’s bandh.
