IMPHAL, May 4: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed over the controversial death of Sagolsem Prashanta, today announced a two days state-wide general strike from midnight today.

The general strike is called at a time when Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) announced a 42-hour “public curfew” which would be started from the midnight of May 5.

As a result of the twin protests ahead, normal life would continue to be effected for the next four days.

The 48-hour general strike which would end on the intervening night of May 5 and 6. It will then be followed by a 42-hour public curfew which would be commenced from the midnight May 5.

The JAC announced the two-day statewide general strike demanding justice in the alleged murder of the youth.

Prasanta was found hanging from a tree at Lilong Haoreibi area recently with both eyes blind-folded and, many bruise marks on his body.

The JAC with the support of several civil organizations has been pressing the state authority to bring to book the culprit(s) at the earliest for the sake of justice.

The decision to call the general strike was taken in a meeting held at the office of the United Committee Manipur (UCM) wherein members of another JAC formed by the people of Lilong area where the youth was found murder and leaders of UCM and All Manipur United Club Organizations, (AMUCO) took part.

The organisations agreed to go hand in hand in pressuring the government to deliver justice to the family of the deceased at the earliest.

Today’s meeting was convened under the initiative of UCM and AMUCO.

The 48-hour general strike was announced after the meeting alleged that the government of failing to take up appropriate action to book the culprit(s) involved in the killing of the youths.

Convener of Lilong area Md Tajuddin appealed the people especially those who are using the social networking like facebook, whatsapp etc not to spread anti-social statement or comments which may disturb the communal harmony.

UCM president Elangbam Johnson observed that abuse of drugs and other intoxicant items were behind most of the crimes in the state.

He appealed both the JACs and other CSOs to launch intensive drive against drugs and other anti-social elements while insisting the government for a swift action to find out the culprit(s) so that harmony among the different communities is maintained.
