Another arrested in HDFC case; jewellery recovered from pond

THOUBAL, July 7: The Thoubal District Police has arrested seven individuals till date in connection with the July 4 HDFC Thoubal branch robbery case and interrogating them, informed a source.

During an operation in connection with the case, the police were able to arrest a person involved in the case and retrieve gold worth around Rs 19 lakhs from a pond yesterday, informed the source.

The accused was arrested around 8:15 in the morning yesterday by a combined team of 2nd Assam Rifles and Nongpok Sekmai Police from Shikhong Sekmai Keithel, according to the source.

It is said the accused identified as Thiyam Suresh, 25, son of Inaobi of Charangpat Mayai Leikai was arrested while he was trying to flee to Ukhrul to go in hiding.

The police also retrieved Rs 52 thousand from the individual, the source added.

Sources also said that during the operation conducted yesterday morning in the area of Charangpat Mayai Leikai, gold worth around Rs 19 lakh was recovered from the pond inside the residential compound of Laishram Jayenta.

The gold was found inside a polythene bag.

Meanwhile, the police are interrogating whether the owner of the pond Jayenta is also involved in the robbery case.

It may be mentioned that the police had started arresting the robbers within 24 hour of the incident and as of now, around 30 percent of the total looted amount have been recovered.

The report to the police regarding the robbery case had stated that Rs. 87,70,805 and Rs. 1,17,18,100 worth in gold were looted.
