BHOPAL: After almost 10 years of its formation, Madhya Pradesh women hockey academy has proved its worth. Academy’s Sushila Chanu has been named the captain of the Indian women hockey team on Tuesday for the Rio Olympics.Preeti Dubey is another player from state who secured place in the team.

Both players have been part of MP Academy for almost five years. Sushila joined academy with its launch in 2007. These players were also part of bronze winning World Cup team. MP Hockey academy was established in 2007 in Gwalior.

Sports minister Yashodhara said all these players have been regular members of Indian hockey team for the last two years.

“It is a great moment for state women hockey. It is outstanding MP women hockey academy has produced captain for the Olympics,” she told TOI.

Chief coach of MP men’s hockey academy, Ashok Dhyanchand said now MP has become hub for women hockey.

“Such performances are rare. Large number of state players representing national team proves there is no dearth of talent in MP,” he said.

Last year, Sushila Chanu was named of captain of the team that participated various international tournaments.
