Women activists protest Sharmila’s decision, block way

IMPHAL, Aug 9: Raising strong allegations of letting down their trust, women activists today protested Irom Chanu Sharmila’s decision of ending her marathon hunger strike.
The women activists were also peeved by Sharmila’s intention to marry an NRI.
After she was officially released from JNIMS security ward at around 4 pm, she addressed a press conference at the hospital.
She was taken to the residence of former Health Director Dr Th Suresh of Keishamthong Laisom Leirak by police.
However, some womenfolk blocked her way to prevent her from reaching Dr Suresh’s house at Keishamthong.
Police then took her to Shamu Makhong. There too, some angry womenfolk prevented her from staying there.
Police then took her inside City police station for her safety at around 6.30 pm.
Later in the night, it is said that she was taken to JNIMS hospital after she offered prayer at ISKCON temple.
During the press conference held at JNIMS earlier in the day, she told the media that she would neither return home nor meet her mother as she is yet achieve her goal of getting AFSPA repealed. Earlier, volunteers of SAKAL and other women organisations shouted against Sharmila when she left Cheirap Court complex.
