Tripura orders inquiry into engagement of ‘illegal’ labourers

AGARTALA: The state administration has ordered a probe into allegations that Bangladeshi migrants have been engaged as labourers in brick kilns in the state.

Home department officials said the illegal engagement of Bangladeshi nationals had come to light after a brick kiln truck met with an accident in South Tripura last week. According to reports, most brick kilns in South Tripura engage Bangladeshi nationals. Local administration and labour department officials claimed to not have prior knowledge of this. “We have asked all district magistrates to find out the situation on the ground,” said a senior official of the home department.

Police said all police stations and surveillance units of security forces, including the BSF, have been asked to keep a close watch on civilian movement and keep an eye on business and industrial activities in the state.
