Vendors needs to be scrutinised for sale of hygienic meat

IMPHAL: Considering consumption of meat in most household of the  state, minister Th Shyamkumar has pointed out the need on the part of Department of Veterinary and Animal
Husbandry to scrutinise and monitor meat vendors so as to ensure sale of hygienic meat and the people do not get infected with various diseases.

MAHUD, Town Planning, Forests & Environment, Horticulture & Soil Conservation minister Th Shyamkumar was speaking as chief guest at the occasion of World Veterinary Day observance held at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound on Saturday.

The function was held under the theme “Antimicrobial Resistance From Awareness to Action” under the aegis of Manipur State Veterinary Council. The minister further informed that the V&AH department needs to test all the meats sold in meat vendors. Shyamkumar stressed the need of proper guidance to those who rear animals as well as for taking proper tips and help from veterinary doctors and experts to check diseases. To give cooperation to the Veterinary Department for fulfilling of plans and policies and to increase livestock population for better economy is highly essential, he added.

Delivering the presidential speech, V&AH minister V Hangkhanlian said that giving kind and proper treatment to animals is essential. Without the prescription of veterinary doctors and experts no injection of antibiotic should be administered. He asked the Veterinary Department to prepare developmental plans and policies, forward it to high level committee for discussion and taking decision.

Principal Secretary (V&AH) L Lakher and director Dr H Chaoba Singh were present as guests of honour while Public Health additional director Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang and ICAR-NEH Region Principal Scientist Dr I Shakuntala Devi attended as resource persons.

Besides other dignitaries, around three hundred Veterinary Officers from all districts of Manipur participated in the function. World Veterinary Day observance was also held at District Veterinary Hospital, Thoubal. Organised by Joint Director District Veterinary,
Thoubal, a free Anti Rabies vaccination Camp was conducted to mark the occasion
and vaccinated around 120 dogs.

As part of the observance, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)-Sylvan, Hengbung in Kangpokpi district also conducted a free anti-rabies vaccination programme to commemorate the global
event at Hengbung village on Saturday. Nearly 60 pets, mainly dogs, were vaccinated under the supervision of Dr N Muhindro Singh, who also addressed the gathering on ‘Antimicrobial
Resistance-from awareness to action’.
