According to an order issued by the Directorate on May 25, it has been informed to the food safety officers and other staffs concerned to constitute four teams. These teams are deployed at different locations on different dates continuing till next month to check the quality and standard of food items which are on sale in the State. The teams will also check the sale of banned food items while giving awareness about food safety standards at the same time.
The first drive began at Kakching Lamkhai along the Imphal-Moreh route today. While on frisking duty at Pallel Lamkhai, the team checked vehicles and confiscated several food products imported from Myanmar. The seizure includes coffee powder, cough powder, digestive powder, energy drinks, milk sweetener, candy of different make, biscuits etc.
The items are mostly sold all over the state and purchased by the public. But, many edible items from Myanmar have been deemed unsafe for consumption as most of them have no expiry date and do not stick to the norms laid down by the Food Safety Standards of India (FSSAI).
Around 31 personnel including food safety officers from different districts joined in the drive. The items worth approximately Rs 30,000 were later burnt at Kakching area. The drive will continue at different locations till next month.
