Sit-in staged, protesters demand judicial probe in Shanti’s death

IMPHAL, Jun 6 : Working Committee of the Apunba Lup today staged a protest demonstration demanding constitution of a high power committee to deliver justice to late Aribam Shanti.

Aribam Shanti, a labourer, was shot dead in Moreh recently.

The protesters also attempted to stormed the Chief Minister’s office to press their demand but were stopped by police at Keishampat-Paona Bazar junction.

During the sit-in staged at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Lairembi community hall, Working Committee of the Apunba Lup co-ordinating convenor Phulindro Konsam said, “Security forces have been committing crime after crime on people including women in the State for years. Aribam Shanti, a labourer, was also shot dead allegedly by the security forces in Moreh. We have made a charter of demands before the State Government and we have started launching agitation against the incident.”

The demands include constitution of a high power committee to initiate a judicial probe, fitting punishment for the culprits involved according to law.

It also demanded that the security forces should stop utilizing UG groups who are under SoO and peace talks to carry out terrorizing activities.

He also added that it will collaborate with the CSOs, NGOs and human rights activists and launch intense agitation in case the Government fails to take up any concrete step within June 10.
