KANGPOKPI, May 18: The Kuki National Front, a SoO signatory under UPF observed its 26 Rising Day today with a mass fasting prayer at its Ebenezer Camp Natheljang without entertaining participants from general public, civil organizations etc.

A source added that there was no external or internal reason or political issue for the outfit to avoid entertaining participants of the general public and others except that the schedule program would not be including other public entertaining programs apart from mass fasting prayer of the outfit active cadres.

Mentioned may be made that, in the previous years on the outfit`s rising day, all business establishment, educational institutions, govt.offices, etc. were informed to close. But this year,  no such thing happened in and around Kangpokpi and its surrounding areas.

IMPHAL, May 18: A press release from the Governor’s Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, Imphal has said that the Governor of Manipur Gurbachan Jagat conveyed his congratulations to the 1st North East Top of the World Mount Everest Expedition Team which by today had successfully sent up 9 climbers to the top of the highest peak in the world while stating that he was proud that two Manipuris are among the nine namely N. Bidyabati Devi and N. Chingkheinganba, who by their achievement have made the state proud.

He continued that MMTA, which is organizing the expedition with support from various agencies deserve all the praise for the momentous effort in bringing climbers of the north eastern states to make a successful attempt to scale the highest peak, which is fraught with risk and danger. In two days, climbers from 6 north eastern states have reached the peak, the states being Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Sikkim, it added.

IMPHAL, May 18: Jewellery shop owners along Wahengbam Leikai shut down their shops and staged a protest against the one year monetary tax reportedly served by the RPF (PLA) today at Wahengbam Leikai.

Speaking to the media, one of the protesting shop keeper said that the jewellery shops had been served a monetary demand by the RPF (PLA) in the form of a one year tax reportedly signed by one Imo, District revenue officer- 2, Finance department RPF a few days back.Saying that the monetary demand was a huge financial burden to the small time traders, the shopkeepers appealed for the demand to be waived.

IMPHAL, May 18: A team of 24 Assam Riffles personnel of Tengnoupal post today seized an IED bomb from a Maruti Van while it was being transported to Imphal along the Imphal-Moreh route on National highway number 2.

The seizure was made while checking the vehicles under registration number MN07-L-1291 at the front of the tengnoupal AR check post at around 2.30 pm today.

IMPHAL, May 18: Personal of 9 Assam rifle arrested the driver and a conductor of a passenger bus at Khudengthabi along National Highway number 2 on the Imphal-Moreh road yesterday for carrying red wood at around 3 pm under Moreh police station in Chandel district

According to a reliable source, the driver is identified as Ibosana (45) of Wangoi Imphal east district and conductor is identified as Tomba (28) of Lilong Thoubal district were carrying around 70 Kg of red wood in the bus they were in (bearing registration number MN01- 1394).

Red Sanders or Red Sandalwood is a lucrative market for smugglers as a high price is paid for this wood in China. It is listed as an endangered species because of its over exploitation.

IMPHAL, May 18: Dr Ng Bijoy, MLA of Khurai assembly constituency today inaugurated the Al-Umnah gym in a function held at Khabeisoi community hall today

On the occasion, Dr Ng Bijoy said that opening up such a gym in the area is a very good initiative and it will help the youth to develop their body fit. The Gym equipment can freshen up their minds  and it will also help to keep the youths of the state free from drugs and alcohols, he said.

IMPHAL, May 18: Kh. Budhichandra Singh of Manipur emerged as the champion at the 5th IBSA powerlifting Championship, 2013 held at New Delhi under the aegis of the Indian Blind Sports’ Association.

Kh. Budhichandra is the son of Kh. Chinglensana of Ithing Mamang Leikai under Bishnupur District. He is now studying in class 10 standard at Govt. Ideal blind school located at Takyelpat, Imphal.  Participating in the 66 kg category, he became the champion at the competition by lifting a total of 315 kg. He was also the champion in this category at the 4th IBSA National Power lifting Championship earlier in 2012.

LAMKA, May 17: Addressing a press meet, Maniram Sharma DC of Churachandpur said today that the obtaining of  Unique Identification Number (UID) or ADHAR  will be a very positive step for the people and help to avail of the benefits from the government.

He announced that there are six locations in the district where people can get their biometric recordd taken and added that even BPL card holders still need to get the ADHAR.

He continued that almost 33% of the total registration of ADHAR has been completed in the district and added that  the state govt directives is for the administration of CCpur to complete obtaining the biometric record by June 30.

The officer said that the need for the 12 digit UID is important for the people of CCpur because almost 90 percent of the families of the district are under BPL and they will need the card to avail their loan job cards and the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

LAMKA, May 17: Cyclonic Storm Mahasen had a minor effect in Ccpur with people not turning up to the marketplace as usual, and several shops doing below  par business.Throughout the day,  the weather fluctuated between sunshine and clouds.

The DC of  CCpur Maniram Sharma said that there was no need to panic as the cyclone threat had gone and the weather was now normal.

But to those selling perishable goods,  it is a different story. As one vegetable hawker Ngaino said, “I have not beem able to sell my items which means I will incur losses.” She however admitted that business picked up a little in the evening.

The district administration today took to using loudspeakers to assure the people that everything was normal with regard to the cyclone.
