The Newseum at Washington, D.C., USA will honor the late journalist – Thangjam Dwijamani Singh of Imphal, Manipur during the rededication of the Journalists Memorial. The ceremony will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Journalists Memorial Gallery at the Newseum, 555 Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington DC, 20001.

A letter from Cathy Trost, Vice President, Exhibits and Programs of the Newseum inviting Thangjam Babu Singh (father of Dwijamani) and his family to the ceremony at Washington DC, was handed over to Thangjam Tulchand Singh (elder brother) on April 18, 2013. Mr. Tulchand accepted the letter with gratitude, and thanked the Newseum for the invitation. The letter was handed over to the family by representatives from KanglaOnline and the Imphal Free Press.

John Powell, Exhibits Writer at the Newseum, journalists from the Imphal Free Press, and members of the KanglaOnline team have been instrumental in communications between the Newseum and Dwijamani’s family.

Dwijamani (32), a resident of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai was killed in the line of duty on December 23, 2012 near the foothills of Cheiraoching hill, Imphal, Manipur, India; while covering an arson incident which erupted as a fall out of the Livingstone / Momoko (actress) molestation incident. He was a reporter for Prime News and Doordarshan Kendra, Imphal.

Dwijamani was covering an incident of a mob burning a truck and bravely continued recording despite police firing towards him. He sustained a bullet wound on his chest and later succumbed to his injuries at RIMS hospital. He is survived by his wife and two children – a 2-year old son and a 1-year old daughter.

The Newseum in Washington, D.C. – a 250,000-square-foot museum of news – offers visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits.

The Journalists Memorial, located in the Newseum, pays tribute to reporters, photographers and broadcasters who have died reporting the news. The names of 2,156 individuals (as of 2012) from around the world are etched on the glass panels of the soaring, two-story structure.

The names of 84 journalists who died covering the news in 2012 will be added to the memorial, along with six journalists killed in previous years who were recently brought to the Newseum’s attention. The 2012 death toll of 84 is the fourth highest number of journalists killed in a single year.

Irom Chanu Sharmila was re-arrested on Wednesday

The Amnesty International statement said: “Irom Sharmila has been on an indefinite fast since November 2000, protesting against the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) in the state of Manipur. She was arrested shortly after she began her hunger strike and charged with attempting to commit suicide – a criminal offence under Indian law. Irom Sharmila, was released on March 12, 2013 by the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Imphal East only to be re-arrested on March 14 and remanded again to judicial custody till March 26. On March 4, a Delhi court had also charged Irom Sharmila with attempting to commit suicide in October 2006, when she staged a protest in Delhi for two days.”

Pointing out that Irom Sharmila has never been brought to trial, the statement said that the anti AFSPA crusader has been regularly released upon the completion of a period of one year in judicial custody, only to be re-arrested shortly thereafter as she continues her fast.

The statement from the Rights body mentioned further that Sharmila has pleaded not guilty to the charges of attempting to commit suicide, and has said she is holding a non-violent protest. Although attempting to commit suicide is a bailable offence in India, Sharmila has refused to sign the bail-bonds, maintaining that she had not committed any offence, and has instead called for the criminal charges against her to be dropped.

The British Medical Association, in a briefing to the World Medical Association, has clarified that “A hunger strike is not equivalent to suicide. Individuals who embark on hunger strikes aim to achieve goals important to them but generally hope and intend to survive.” This position is embodied by the World Medical Association in its Malta Declaration on Hunger Strikers, the statement said.

Amnesty International has also previously called upon the Government to repeal the AFSPA, which provides impunity for perpetrators of serious human rights violations, including extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, rape and torture.

The post Ancient star shaped mud fort discovered at Maklang, Manipur appeared first on KanglaOnline.com.

Manipur,IMPHAL, March 3: A mud fort built in the shape of a star has been discovered in a paddy field located at Maklang Bihu Loukon. The place is at a distance of about 15 kilometers westward from Imphal town and comes under Patsoi police station, Imphal West.

One has to travel along the National Highway 37 and take a right turn at the police station near HVS brick field. A straight drive towards Maklang and a left turn towards Maklang Makha Leikai and one will reach Bihu Loukon.

This IFP reporter went to the spot and saw the mud ramparts which are approximately about 15 feet thick and about 5 feet in height. Each triangular arm of the star shaped fort is about 156 feet in length. The fort has eight arms encompassing a circumference of around 5/6 hectares.

A sexagenarian local, Ahongbam Ibomcha identified the ‘pallis’. According to him, the mud ramparts has been there since ancient times and used to be a lot thicker and higher. There was also a long canal where boats were raced. The area is also called ‘Thangapat’ now, but the canal had dried up and was consequently converted to arable land. Interestingly, there is another rectangular mud wall of similar height and thickness with a design of podium stands on each side and located about 200 feet approximately from the star shaped fort.

Ancient star shaped mud fort discovered at Maklang, Manipur: Picture: Bing Maps

Though much of the ramparts of the outer barrier has eroded with time and farming activity around it, the fort has remained in a much better condition. While locals of the area have the usual supernatural stories and taboos, they were not aware that the design of the fort is star shaped, which is obvious only on satellite imagery and not from the ground perspective. “The palli resembles a star”, an astonished Ibomcha quipped to his friends after being shown the satellite image.

When IFP met archeologist Nanjesh Thongbam and inquired about the fort, the expert said that the discovery was made about a month back after someone informed the Kangla Fort Board about the peculiar design. The person had seen the shape on Google Earth.

Later the archeologist along with another colleague Dr. Okram Kumar inspected the site and gathered information from the locals about the structure. He was told by the elders that the place was ruled by a king called Chakpa Charairongba. But Nanjesh insisted that the name should be Chothae Charairongba according to reference from Moirang Kangleirol. There were also 7 ‘heibi’ trees planted on the periphery of the fort and supposed to be a manifest of 7 maichous (sages). There are still two trees left. The locals mentioned that those who chopped down the trees met with ill fate and died shortly.

Nanjesh said that the star shaped fort may have been built with a military strategy as there are twin mud ramparts of different designs and the area is located with waterways on every direction. He could not verify the age of the fort or the era in which it was built as research is still underway. He said that a technique called radiometric dating will be utilized to confirm the time that the mud wall dates to. “This technology will tell the exact date that the sun first shone on the fresh mud, we can tell the exact date it was built,” he said while adding that the fort must be much older than Kangla Fort as bricks were not used.

He voiced his appeal to the concerned state authorities to announce the area of the star fort shaped as a protected historical site.

My recent tour to Mizoram hasn’t been short of any surprises. I had never heard nor seen anywhere; but I did in Mizoram. All along the highway you will find these veggie shops (picture below). These shops have no shopkeepers; but it has the veggie items, Money box (tumbler) and the price list is kept along. Buyers as they pass through, they buy the veggies, put the money in the box and leave.

What an example of honesty and integrity. I salute all the Mizo people for such a display.

I suppose, rest of the world should come and learn from them. Jesus reigns!!

Kudos to all the Mizos.
