Militants beat up govt officers in Manipur

Imphal, Aug 18: Employees of the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation on Wednesday staged a sit-in protest against the assault and abduction of staff of the corporation by cadres of a militant group yesterday.

Two militants of the said group yesterday beaten up three officials before taking away three other staff including the executive engineer on Tuesday, official reports said.
Executive engineer of the MTDC, Md Sallaudin, section officer (SO) Samuel Hmar and driver of EE Md Nasir were beaten up by the militants, who intruded into the office room of the executive engineer yesterday afternoon, according to the staff taking part in the protest staged at its office premises suspending all works of the day.

Later, they (militants) forcibly took away the EE along with the assistant engineer W Chandramani and accountant E Chandrakumar to an Alto car belonging to the accountant only to release at around 4.30 pm at Keisampat Thiyam Leikai.

The incident took place at about 9 am while the staffs were busy in their file works. Two militants entered into the office and closed the door and asked for the EE, AO, AE etc. employees taking part in the protest revealed.

They did it in connection with failure on the part of the staff to give a positive response on their demand for percentage cut from the works executed by the engineering division of the Manipur Tribal Development Department, contract work for the construction of Guest house at Barrack in Tamenglong district, Tourist Building of Tourism Department in Imphal, they disclosed.

Alleging that the office neglected their demands, the two militants beaten up staff of the office with wooden log and in it Nasir sustained head injury. He was hospitalized at Imphal Hospital and other received less injuries at hand and leg, employees alleged.

Registering a strong protest against the act of the militants, employees of the corporation today staged a sit-in protest at its office premises at Lamphelpat in Imphal suspending all official works of the day.
