NGOs working for disabled asked to be more transparent

IMPHAL, Oct 4: Officials of the State government and NGOs especially who are working for the development of Disable Persons of the state required more transparency in the interest of the disabled.

This was said by the Handicap Development Foundation Executive Officer on education, culture Affair to the media persons today on a press meet held at its office Sagolband Tera Pukhri Mapal this afternoon.
The officer further said that it is very unfortunate to know that an SFE official (NGO) and official of the Bishnupur District Social Welfare department Siphoned off some amounts from disable scholarship which was recently noticed, on the pretext of handing to the rightful person.

Further he requested the concern authority to take up enquiry about this matter in the interest of the handicap persons to maintain transparency.

The victim Md Amirkhan 18 yrs on of Md Sabirruddin of Kwakta ward number III at present studying class XII Science at Moirang Multipurpose Hr. Sec. School disclosed that he had newly registered his scholarship for the year 2010 subsequently he was selected as per the notification issued by the Social Welfare Department, Bishnupur distict recently.

He further said that on 29 September 2010 he went to claim his disable scholarship to the department and the office cashier informed him that one NGO namely SFE, M Somokanta has taken away his scholarship amount along with for some other persons stating that he will hand over the rightful persons. Unfortunately till today the said NGO is yet to hand over to him, said Amirkhan.

The HD foundation Bishnupur unit secretary Ningthoujam Lakhikanta also said various NGOs and state government had help disable persons providing many benefits but such vested interest persons are taking advantages without the knowledge of the rightful persons adding owing to such activities many person may have encountered humiliation.

He further said so many NGOs had also visited disable person’s residence and took photos, collected documents with the false promise of providing benefits. However some among the NGOs failed to responded adding with such activities increasing people are left with doubts that such fake NGOs could have been running secretly. He appealed the concerned authority to check such activities.
