Agri awareness programme held by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), complex, Lamphel

IMPHAL, Jan 11: A one day programme on protection of plant varieties and farmers Right Act was organized at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), complex, Lamphel.
The programme was organized by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Imphal West and ICAR.
While addressing the gathering as the chief guest of the function, L. Palendro Singh, Director Department of Agriculture of Manipur, stress the need to set up an apex body of the farmers in order to protect plant varieties and deliver the Right of the farmers.
Palendro claimed that due to lack of co-operation and enthusiasm in developing agriculture in the state various farmers products of the state has been claimed by others. He pointed out that Nagaland has acquired the patent right to U-morok (a variety of locally grown chilli).
He further maintained that Agricultural land is being reduced gradually due to development however he has also urged the farmers to give their commitment in farming the number of varieties of products available in Manipur and with the application of new technologies Manipur can produce enough for self-sustenance.
About 100 farmers took part in the programme during which Dr. IM Singh, senior scientist seed technician gave awareness programme as a resource persons.
