Army razes poppy fields at Thangjing hills

IMPHAL Jan 13: Troops of 16 MARATHA Light Infantry of Loktak Brigade under the aegis of Red Shield Division destroyed approximately 2 acres of poppy cultivation over a period of two days which was being cultivated in the interiors of Thangjing hill of Churachandpur district, stated a PIB (DW) press release.
It said the anti narcotics drive was carried out based on the information that Poppy was being cultivated in remote areas of Churachandpur district.
The objective is to discourage the villagers from getting involved in illegal activities as well as preventing the innocent youth from falling prey to the drug culture, it added.
The troops of 16 MARATHA Light Infantry also conducted an Anti Drugs Campaign at Gothal on 12 January  to spread awareness about the ill effects of drugs among the youth and children of the area, it said.
The local health authorities and members of NGOs dealing with anti HIV drive also extended their full cooperation. Around 175 youths and students from local educational institutions were present on the occasion, it added.
On 11 January a medical camp was organized by a medical team consisting of 3 doctors and 8 paramedics from 357 Field Hospital at the remote village Ireng. The camp was conducted under the aegis of 57 Mtn Division. The people of Ireng, which is a far flung village in Senapati district, greatly appreciated the gesture by the Red Shield Division. 207 patients were given free medical care and treatment at the camp.
The health problems of the village which does not have any existing medical set up were shared with the medical team by the village authorities. An interactive lecture was also organized in the community hall regarding various childhood infectious diseases and their prevention, the release concluded.
