Kharam students meet concludes

    IMPHAL, Jan 19: Let us unite together and try and make education, sports and culture the identity of each of the various indigenous communities inhabiting in the state. This was stated by Engocha, social worker Lamlai AC while addressing the closing function of the 5th All Kharam Students Conference cum Cultural Meet, 2011 at the Tuisenphai village ground, Senapati district.
    Various cultural programmes, sporting events, Quiz and a debate on corruption were held during the week long conference cum cultural meet which started from January 13 and ended today. The closing function was attended by Engocha as the chief guest and R Saneichowng Kharam, president All Kharam Student Union, Manipur as the president.
    AK Kom, president Komren Union, S Bormani, secretary Young Horizan along with other village chieftains attended the function as guest of honours.
    Engocha further added that of the 43 communities dwelling presently in the state, the government is yet to give recognition status to 7. He added that Manipur is look upon as a garden by the outside world with different flowers blooming together in a garden.
    He further maintained that we should work together to help smaller communities to survive and expand themselves so that the smaller communities are not extinct from the state.
    Citing Mary Kom as an example who took her community and her state to the outside world, he further added that the youths of the community should work hard to promote and foster education, sports and their culture in order to take their community to the outside world.
    AK Kom while speaking to the gathering maintained that such kind of conference is needed inorder to preserve, promote and encourage the culture and traditions of the smaller communities like the Kom and the Kharam tribes of Manipur. He further maintained that there are only 5-6 villages inhabited by the Kharam tribe with a population of only about 3000 individuals and as such the elders of the communities should support and help the youth of today in promoting and preserving the Kharam tribe.
    The main highlights of the closing function were the cultural programme which was followed by a football final match and prize distribution of the various competitions held during the week long conference.
