`Casual attitude of public has led to failure of awareness prog`

IMPHAL June 19: DGP Y Joykumar addressing the prevalent HIV/AIDS status in the state has said despite the all out efforts made by NGO’s and the government on the issue, the status quo seems to remain as it is.

He was speaking as functional president of a one day constituency level convention on HIV/AIDS, organized by the Manipur Legislators’ Forum at Epathoukok Sanglen, Naoremthong Bazar today.

Saying that though awareness programs are carried out most of the time, it fails to deliver despite the efforts, he added that the public takes a casual attitude to such programs and after a few days forgets about the issue, whereas the affected persons are left high and dry.

He further said that the AIDS and drug dependency problems have been faced by the public for the last three decades and numerous lives have been lost.

“If we don’t address the HIV pandemic seriously, then our society may well go into extinction, so each and every one of us should be concerned at the foremost”

“We have to make an all out effort, redressal must be done with frequency, and we need to find out the causes behind the drug abuse and AIDS prevention so that a qualitative and quantitative change may come in the society” he said.

The DGP also emphasized that the affected persons should be given means to make them self dependent, so that others may follow suit, thereby making them respectable citizens.

The convention was attended by PDA chairman Kh Loken, MLA of Uripok A/C L Nandakumar, councilors of ward number 4 and 5, L Arenkumar and Ph Baleshwor and president of Epathoukok, Murali Meitei.

As a gesture of goodwill towards the affected children of Uripok area, Y Ibempishak, better half of the DGP and retired officer of Education department Y Keno Singh gave a donation of Rs 50,000 and 30,000 respectively for 44 affected children.
