Huge amount of extortion money recovered from arrested millitant: Army

IMPHAL, June 30: Security forces have claimed to have arrested three militant cadres during separate counter insurgency operations in the state on June 29 and recovered a sum of Rs 6,89,500 from one of them.

Troops of 27 Assam Rifles claimed to have arrested two militant cadres in a counter insurgency operation conducted yesterday in the general area of Meirangbal of Thoubal district.

A statement of the PRO IGAR (S) has identified the cadres as one s/s cpl of proscribed PLA militant, S Priyo Kumar, 25, s/o Bihari Singh of Lamdeng Khuno, Imphal West District and a PREPAK cadre, Haobijam Rajen Singh, 52, s/o Late G Singh of Lamdeng Khunou, Imphal West District.

One 9 mm Pistol with magazine (Brazil made) and 10 live rounds of 9 mm ball were recovered from them who along with the recoveries was handed over to Wabagai Police station, further added the release.

Meanwhile, troops of 22 AR of 57 Mountain Artillery Brigade under the aegis of Red Shield Division apprehended a militant of the proscribed outfit PLA, namely Army No. 1427 sergeant major Loitongbam Sanotomba Singh alias Chinglensana, 30, from Shiv Colony Silchar Town on June 29.

A release of the PIB Defence Wing has said that the militant was staying at Silchar Town and was carrying out extortion activities for the outfit.

The successful operation has busted a high profile extortion racket of the RPF/PLA which was being run by the apprehended militant in South Assam and Jiribam subdivision of Imphal East, it stated.

The release further added that extortion money amounting to Rs. 6,89,500 was also recovered from the possession of the apprehended militant. The militant was later handed over to Silchar Police Station, it added.
