IMPHAL, June 30: The Patna-based Le Mashale will carry out a candlelight march at Kargil Chowk, Patna, on July 1 in support of Irom Sharmila’s struggle against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.

According to a release of the Just Peace Foundation, a release of the group has stated that in the Indian democracy the age of protests against the hard line government policies has made its retreat. Irom Chanu Sharmila (Iron Lady Of Manipur) is but one young leader who has been on hunger strike for over ten years demanding the Indian government to repeal the AFSPA, 1958.

Her campaign has been supported by various international leaders and people of Manipur and yet she has been sidelined by not only the government and even by the media.

It further added that the iconic public resistance against torture, forced disappearances and extrajudicial executions in the north-east needs a wide range support. People and media, in multiple ways, ought to come overboard to promote and headline her cause. This is very much necessary to retain faith in independence and the democracy, it added.
