Awareness programme cum felicitation held

IMPHAL July 31: One day awareness programme on education cum felicitation of meritorious Muslim students was held today at Manipur press club organized by All Manipur Muslim College Teachers’ association (AMMCOTA).

The association felicitated students who secured 80% and above in the examinations conducted by Board of Secondary Education Manipur and Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur for the year 2011. 18 meritorious Muslim students were felicitated during function in which a cash prize along with gift hamper and a citation each was handed over to the meritorious students by dignitaries that were present on the dais.

A. Halim Chowdhury, IAS (retd), chairperson of Manipur Minorities commission, M.A. Janab Khan, former director of education (U) government of Manipur and Md. Khalilur Rahman, president of AMMCOTA also the principal of L.H. College, Lilong were present on the dais as the chief guest, guest of Honour and president respectively.

While giving key note address during the function, the secretary of AMMCOTA, Dr. M. Bahadur, appealing the government said that the Urdu language should be included as a subject in primary and upper primary schools in the state as per assurance made by the government in January 1978.

He maintained that the Manipuri Muslim community that represents only 9% of the total population of the state is still backward in the education sector. He further added that the AMMCOTA has been striving since its inception in 2006 to improve and uplift the education of the Muslim youths in the state. “Urdu is still not taught in schools even though there are many Madrasa in the state” he added.

During the function various speakers emphasized on the need to established an Urdu University in the state and also to introduce the Urdu language as one of the optional subjects in the higher educations in the state.

The function was also attended by M.S. Salam, MCS, deputy secretary education (U), A. Quayum, senior Advocate, Reihanuddin, MCS, deputy secretary (Home) and M.A. Sukur MCS, retd. Additional district magistrate- Imphal east as the resource persons for one day educational awareness programme cum felicitation function held today.

The one day awareness programme on education was held with prime focus for X and XII standard students.
