IMPHAL, July 23: Water level of most major rivers of Manipur have receded remarkably after all five gates of Ithai barrage were opened today releasing excess water from the rivers and potentially ending threat of immediate flood in many areas of the state. According to officials of the flood control cell of IFCD, only Lilong River, Nambul River and Thoubal River are flowing above warning levels in the evening today. The water levels at all other major rivers like Manipur River Imphal River, Nambol River and Iril River have decreased enough to reduce fear of them overflowing.

Meanwhile, the repair of a breach at a canal at Khabi Maning Leikai is being carried out by a workforce comprising of IFCD staff and local residents. According to IFCD officials, almost 60-70 percent of the work of sealing the hole at the canal has been completed by today evening and repair on the remaining portion is expected to be completed by tomorrow.

However, as a result of water escaping from the huge gap in the canal, large areas of Khabi Hidakshung, Thantek and nearby villages, including fields with standing crops, are still submerged.
