24 hr general strike called demanding whereabouts of RPF leader

IMPHAL August 28: The Joint Action Committee constituted today with regard to forced disappearance of GM Changjou alias Gurumayum Jisteshwor Sharma,49, assistant publicity secretary of the proscribed RPF, has called a 24 hours statewide general strike beginning from the midnight of September 1.

Briefing media persons today evening at Sinjubung Leirak, Pushpa Gurumayum member of the ‘JAC against the enforced disappearance and arbitrary detention of G Jiteshwor Sharma alias GM Changjou’ said that a public rally was held today. The rally was organized by Singjubung Youth Organization and Khwai Singjubung Womens’ Welfare Association and began from Gurumayum Mantop today afternoon and proceeded towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow. The rally was halted at Khwairamband Bazar area by police and denied the rally to proceed further. The protestors’ later tore the memorandum paper demanding the whereabouts of the imprisoned cadre and threw it at the police.

Later, shops around Nagamapal area were made to shut down by the protestors and later held an emergency meeting at Gurumayum Mantop. The meeting was attended by representatives of Singjubung Youth Organization, Khwai Singjubung Womens’ Welfare Association, Cultural and Development Society, Uripok Progressive Youth Organisation along with other residents of the area. A JAC was constituted comprising of 17 official members and instituted L Ashangbi Devi as the convener.

The JAC’s meeting further resolved to impose a 24 hour general strike from September 1 midnight demanding the government to reveal the whereabouts of Jiteshwor and appealed to all civil organizations, student bodies, meira paibee organizations to support the strike.
