Illegal red wood worth crores seized

IMPHAL, Aug 3: 27 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Red Shield Division seized high value red wood worth crores at Singhat. Two trucks with registration numbers NL 07 A 3790 and NL 05 D 1933 moving from Imphal towards Songtal were intercepted by a vehicle check post established by 39 Assam Rifles at Singhat. Both the trucks did not possess any valid vehicle documents. The drivers of the trucks claimed to have been carrying rice bags and soyabean bags to Mizoram.

The trucks were checked threadbare and it was found that each of the trucks was carrying 200 big logs of red wood.  The drivers of the trucks have been identified as Muanminlian and Lalminlian. Both the drivers revealed the name of the owners of the trucks.

The case is being investigated in consultation with the forest officials. It would be relevant to mention here that this high value wood is smuggled into Myanmar where it is used to make statues of Budha, perfumes, incense sticks and various other artifacts which are sold at high price in Thailand and South East Asia.

The smuggling of this high value red wood has come to light in Churachandpur in the recent times and 27 Sector Assam Rifles has intercepted such a consignment for the second time in last one month.
