Teachers` strike leaves colleges in state idle

IMPHAL, August 1: All government colleges of the state including colleges of the hill districts remained defunct today, owing to the cease work strike agitation of the Federation of College Teachers Association Manipur (FECTAM) which commenced from today.

In a survey conducted by IFP at all major colleges in Imphal, it was found out that although most colleges recorded normal attendance of both students and teachers, no classes or any education related activities were conducted at the colleges.

Students were seen loitering in an around the college campuses with classes remaining defunct. Teachers were also seen sitting idle and in clusters in their own respective colleges.

At the same time banners were also displayed in some of the college saying “Government college teachers are on cease work strike”.

Ch. Shilaramani, FECTAM secretary and a teacher in the DM college of Art, stated that all education related activities including semester examinations have been cancelled until the prolonged demand of the teachers is fulfilled.

While terming the adamant attitude of the government as unfortunate, she disclosed that the college teachers has no intention of jeopardizing the academic atmosphere of the students, however, the adamant attitude has only compelled them to resort to such form of agitation, she asserted.

Blaming the government as responsible for the large number of migration of students to colleges outside the state, she said, “If the government gives more attention to strengthening the education system there is no need for students to go to other states for pursuing there higher studies”.

A first year student of DM College of commerce S. Momon, expressed his apprehension that if such disturbances continue the syllabus might not be covered in time.

He said that even as the students give full efforts in their studies the result will not be as remarkable without help from the teachers, and further expressed his desire to study outside the state whenever such disruption emerges.

Another student of GP Women College, on the condition of anonymity has appealed to the government and teachers to bring an amicable solution at the earliest considering the career of the students.

Students in other colleges have also appealed to both sides to bring a solution to the deadlock at the earliest.
