Chiefs` association welcomes end to Sadar Hills stalemate but unhappy with MoU terms

IMPHAL, November 7: The Sadar Hills East Chief’s Association submitted a memorandum to the state Chief Minister this afternoon at 3 pm demanding the immediate creation of the Lhungtin Sub-Division instead of SDC circle under Saikul sub-division; creation of  SDC circle at Phawoibi under the proposed Island sub-division and placing of sub-divisional headquarters at the existing SDC circle headquarters.

The demands also include the implementation of the demands during the implementation of the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the government and the Sadar Hills District Demands Committee, SHDDC.

The chief’s association further briefed media persons during a press conference held this evening at Imphal said that it welcomes the bold steps in resolving the stalemate between the SHDDC and the government with the signing of the MoU on October 31.

However, he has further appealed to the state government for re-consideration and review of the terms of the MoU as both the state government and the SHDDC have failed to understand that Sadar Hills is divided into two divisions, the Sadar Hills East and West.

He further informed that the term for the creation of three sub-divisions namely Champhai, T. Vaichong and Kangchup Geljang fro Sadar Hills west as against one sub-division at Island and Lhungtin SDC circle is humiliation of the highest order and step motherly treatment of the people of the Sadar Hills East.

He further charged that the government is playing a game to invite misunderstandings between the people of the Sadar Hills East and West.

He further said that in respect of geographical area and size of population and in comparison with that of Sadar Hills West, Sadar hills East fulfills all the criteria for creation of two or more sub-divisions with SDC circles.

He also mentioned that the association is unable to comply and accept the agreement arrived between the government and the SHDDC regarding the placing of sub-divisional headquarters at T. Waichong in place of Chalwa, Kangchup Geljang in place of Kangchup and creation of Champhai sub-division which has remain sparsely populated till date.

He also mention that, the bias attitude of the government and the SHDDC between the people of the East and West in the name of administrative convenience is unacceptable and stands unjustifiable, and if justice is not restored, the association would be compelled to launch all forms of agitation and it should be the sole responsibility of the government, he added.
