Proposal to amend AFSPA under consideratin: Centre

NEW DELHI, Nov 22 (agencies): Despite sustained pressure for revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, on security matters the government of India carefully evaluates the situation on the ground before taking any decision.

This was stated by minister of state for home affairs, M Ramachandran in a Lok Sabha reply, confirming that representations have been received from various NGOs in Manipur seeking withdrawal of the notification declaring certain areas as disturbed and repeal of the Act. AFSPA is currently in force in Assam and Nagaland, besides some parts of Manipur and Tripura in NE region.

In a separate reply, the minister, however, admitted that a proposal to amend the AFSPA is under consideration of the Centre. The Ministry of Home Affairs is seized of the matter and the process of consultation is going on to arrive at a decision.
