Assam: Planning Commission sanctions Rs 750 cr for erosion control

The Planning Commission has sanctioned an amount of 750 crore rupees to Assam for erosion control and rehabilitation of the affected people for the year of 2012-13. Talking to newspersons in Guwahati today, Chief Minister Mr. Tarun Gogoi said that the Planning Commission has allotted 1 thousand 500 crore rupees for irrigation and erosion control. Out of the total allocation, 50 percent fund will be utilized to control erosion.

Last year, Assam Government utilized around 210 crore rupees for erosion control and rehabilitations. It may be recalled that Assam lost an area of over 4 lakh bighas of land in the last 40 years due to erosion by rivers. The state has 44 erosion prone rivers in Brahmaputra valley.

The state government has also decided to start a project to reclaim parts of the land eroded by river. The low -cost project will be implemented at Sualkuchi area in Kamrup district as pilot basis with the support of Asian Development Bank.
