Green methods to combat climate change

IMPHAL, July 20: As part of its annual initiative of tree plantation in the Senapati district since 2009, the Maram Students’ Union organized an Environmental Interface cum Massive tree plantation towards “Combating Climate Change & Global Warming” at the Multipurpose hall, Mini Secretariat, Senapati today.

The programme was conducted in collaboration with the district administration.

Speaking at the function, the Senapati Deputy Commissioner PK Jha who attended the function as the chief guest said deforestation had brought adverse change in the past few years and that afforestation in the district is as much relevant as in other parts of the world.

He continued that forest covers in the state are diminishing and as such we should stop felling down trees indiscriminately. Considering the future generations, we should start tree plantation on large scale, so that they can enjoy the nature in its truest forms.

He further appealed to the people to be vigilant towards indiscriminate felling of trees and that the general public should complain to the authorities if they find any such activities. The authorities will definitely take actions.

Meanwhile DFO, Senapati Kh Ibohal who attended as the president said the initiative has been organized since 2009 and continued annually.

He said that forest and trees play an important role in our society and that deforestation affects society in the negative way.

Without green revolution, carbon dioxide cannot be absorbed. Without tree plantation, we will face more severe climate changes as with the ever increasing population, everything including living spaces is becoming scarce, the DFO said.

Forest department will organized many more tree plantation programmes, he assured.

Maram Student’s Union president Pungdi P Celestine said the student union has been initiating the tree-plantation, Go-Green mission since 2009.

He also expressed his hope that it will further inspire many others to follow suit.

He continued that climate change and global warming have today become the greatest challenge to the human existence. The initiative is an attempt to give back to Mother Earth what has been taken away.

He added that the MKS is committed to act locally as it feels that when it comes to saving the planet, even the smallest act counts.

The massive tree plantation was inaugurated by the Senapati DC PK Jha and DFO Kh Ibohal.

Tree saplings were planted in the surrounding area during the massive tree plantation programme.

The function was also attended by students of Mt Carmel and Saklim Christian English School.

The tree plantation programme will be continued on July 21 at market/public places along NH 2 and on July 23 at Willong Barren Land.
