IMPHAL, Sept 25: Imphal West commandos and 18 Sikh Regiment in a skirmish shot dead a suspected underground cadre at about 5.40 pm today.
The incident occurred at an inter village road connecting Uchekon to Toubungkhok near Jamini Ashram under Lamphel Police Station.
Reports mentioned that the joint team was conducting a frisking operation at the area, the person came on foot and when he saw the combined force, took out a handgrenade and hurled it towards the security personnel. The security forces also retaliated and in an ensuing encounter, the individual was killed.
A grenade pin, 3 empty cases of 9mm pistol and a pistol of the same caliber was recovered from the slain individual. The hand grenade though primed failed to explode.
The deceased wore a white T shirt, blue jeans and black shoes and looks to be about 25 years. The body is being deposited at RIMS morgue.
