Woman killed trying to settle a fight

IMPHAL, January 21: A woman succumbed to injuries sustained while stepping in to stop a fight between her son and two of his cousins at Poirou Khongjin Torban Leikai under Yairipok Police. The woman has been identified as Sakhitombi, 58 wife of Laishram Shamungou.

Locals meanwhile convened a public meeting today and later dismantled the alleged acussed’s house.

The fight occurred last night around 8pm, when the woman’s son Laishram Shantikumar (30) and his wife Anuradha (20) came out around 8pm to eat some pan from their own shop at their residential gate, according to the police. Shantikumar’s cousin, L Raj (29) son of L Ramo teased the two using derogatory language following which, there was fight between Shantikumar and Raj at the courtyard, police said.

Raj’s elder brother Meina (37) also joined in the fight, the police said.

Hearing the commotion at the courtyard, Shantikumar’s mother Sakhitombi came out to intervene but Raj hit her with a Nanchakku after which she fainted near the doorstep. She was rushed to the Yairipok PHC but succumbed to her injury on the way.

Ramo was picked up the police this morning while Rajo surrendered before the Lamphel police today. But his elder brother Meinya is still absconding.

Following the incident, the locals convened a public meeting and dismantled Raj’s and Meinya home.

The locals also dismantled their father Ramo’s home at Kaina. Police have deposited the dead body at the JNIMS morgue.
