Founder of LMS Law College unveiled

IMPHAL, May 17: State Education Minister M Okendro Singh today unveiled a statue of Lairenmayum Sheibyashachi founder of LMS Law College at the college this morning.

Addressing the function, the Minister said the college is an important institute of the state.

He continued that even though the college looks attractive when viewed from the outside, the inside is not befitting of a college of repute.

The Minister continued that the students and the college cannot only depend on the government for the improvement and beautification of the college and they need to take an initiative towards developing the college.

Reacting to a request from the students of the college submitted earlier, the Minister said the government will provide all possible assistance towards improvement of the college.

Expressing that students prefer to flock outside the state for their higher studies, the Minister appealed to the students to consider studying in the institutes based in the state.

He further appealed against the imposition of bandhs, blockade by the people for their demands and continued that there is assurance that all demands are justifiable and the government would grant them all. He expressed that every issue can be solved through dialogues.

College Principal Md Salatur Rahaman said the Law College was established on August 7, 1958 as a private college by Lairenmayum Sheibyashachi and on April 1, 1981 it came under the Manipur government.

Elaborating on the life and works of the college founder, he continued that Lairenmayum Sheibyashachi was an educationist.

Meanwhile, Sh Poireiton, president of the college students’ union in his key note address appealed to the concern authorities to open a five year integrated law course as in other parts of the country and to provide facilities for higher studies in the college.

He also highlighted that there are only five regular lecturers and nine lecturers on contract basis in the college and pointed out the need for separate toilet facilities for faculties and students in the college.
