Demands for inclusion of meitei/meeteis in ST list

IMPHAL, July 21: The Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur has today said in a press release that this demand committee has placed before the government of India that before the merger of Manipur in India 1949 there was a cohesive, harmonious and peaceful society which was split into tribals and non- tribals and further adding that the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur was making efforts to recover the cohesive harmonious and peaceful society.

A study has revealed that the true origin of the Meitei race has been re-discovered.

Meitei being mongoloid has a birth right to demand for their rightful place in the list of the Scheduled Tribe of the Govt of India and added that the Meitei being Mongoloid-Tai, they should be the plain tribal of Manipur, which is a hill state, according to Govt of India, it said.

It is also stated that the object of the Govt of India is to protect the tribals from economic, political and social domination by other communities.

By giving instances for Assam, the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had announced the inclusion of some indigenous community tribes in the list of the Scheduled Tribes, and lastly, the STDCM is demanding inclusion of the Meitei in the list of the Scheduled Tribes of the Govt of India under article 32 (1) of the India Constitution, it further demanded.
