Life ban and not jail term fitting punishment for Dingko: Sharmila

IMPHAL, January 18: Irom Sharmila was produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class at Lamphel Court today.

Reacting to the Dingko Singh issue, Sharmila  said outside the courtroom that putting him in jail may not be the right decision but banning him for life from being a coach would be a befitting punishment.

Sharmila had earlier deposed before the judge that she was fit to travel and her health was fine.

The judge also asked her advocate about her schedule for appearance  at Patiala Court on January 30 and affirmed that the concerned Home department officials have already been intimated.

The intimation is to make arrangements for the funds required for travel expenses of Sharmila and the medical team with security escort.

After coming out from the courtroom, Sharmila told IFP that sportsmanship begins with self-discipline and only a disciplined person can excel in his given field.

Coming out strongly against the recent assault of three teenage sportswomen at Khuman Lampak by renowned pugilist Ngangom Dinko, she said that the act of beating up the innocent girls with such brutality should be condemned at the highest level.

“He should not be allowed to coach anymore,” Sharmila said before adding that Dingko who should be more responsible as a coach has degraded himself in public.

However, she stated that putting him in jail may not be the right decision, and removing him from being a coach for all time a more befitting punishment.

Her appearance at Patiala Court which falls on January 30 is yet to be confirmed as the funds for travel has not been released from the state Home department. Her next appearance at JMIC Imphal East court is scheduled on February 1.
