Moreh erupts in protest against non-locals death

Myanmar delegate enroute to Guwahati refused entry

MOREH, February 21: The general public of border town Moreh today took out a mass protest rally in connection with the missing of two non-local salesmen and the subsequent recovery of their mutilated dead bodies yesterday. The All Community Welfare Committee also submitted a memorandum to the Myanmar Ambassador to India at New Delhi questioning the safety of Indian traders in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, a high ranking official and some delegates from Myanmar enroute to Guwahati were not allowed to enter Moreh.

Today’s protest rally, which was held under the guidance of the leaders of all communities of the border town, commenced from Moreh Bazar Gurduwara at around 8.30am.

A state ministerial team led by Commerce and Industries minister Govindas Konthoujam; Irrigation and Flood Control minister Ngamthang Haokip; MLA Tengnoupal Korungthang; Chandel ADC chairman Lukhosei Zou had also met with leaders of the all communities leaders at the end of the rally at Moreh Bazar.

The two salesmen had gone missing since February 11 after entering into the neighbouring Myanmar through Gate no 2, and their mutilated bodies were recovered yesterday from near Indo-Myanmar Border Pillar No 62 at LH Zangnomphai village under Molcham PS around 1pm.

The all communities rally after passing along the National Highway No 2 and after reaching Gate No 1 Indo Myanmar Border Iron Bridge returned along the Dal Pati Road and passed through Gate No 2, Muslim Nagar, Chavangphai, Heinoumakhong Leikai and concluded at the Moreh Bazar, where a public meeting was also held.

The protestors held placards reading, “Is Myanmar a killing field”, “Does Friendship means to kill”, “Do we pay Rs 10/- to be killed”, “Life is precious do not destroy”, “Indians respect Human life why not Myanmar”, “Do we obtain entry pass to be killed”, etc.

Volunteers of several civil organisations, student bodies, meira paibis and public leaders also participated in the rally.

Later in the afternoon, the ministerial team held a meeting with leaders of all the communities residing in the border town alongwith ADC, Chandel chairman Lukhosei Zou; ADC Moreh Robert Singh Kshetrimayum; SDPO/immigration officer at the IB of the Moreh PS.
