Vehicles damaged at Lilong centre in aftermath mob violence

IMPHAL, March 14: Family members of a girl expelled for using unfair means on the last day of the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur conducted high school leaving certificate exam and locals turned violent today at Lilong damaging atleast five vehicles.

Protestors pelted stones at the exam centre, while police resorted to firing of tear gas shells and blank shots to ward of the mob.

After students writing the exam joined in the milieu, the exam had to be discontinued half an hour ahead of the actual time schedule.

BOSEM team and other officials were later moved out of the centre in bullet-proof vehicles of the 40th Assam Rifles.

A board flying squad expelled a girl candidate at the Lilong Higher Secondary Madrassa School around 10.30 am after being caught using unfair means during the Maths paper today.

Locals present at the centre informed that soon after the girl fainted.

This angered the locals and family members of the girl who were present in the area and gathered in front of the centre.

The mob soon grew in size and started pelting stones at the examination centre, while the exam was underway.

Police tried to control the mob, but to no avail.

The mob went berserk and started damaging vehicles of officials and staff parked in the vicinity of the centre. Meanwhile, students from the examination centres joined in the melee, aggravating the situation further.

The mob used stones, sticks and other weapons to attack the vehicles parked in the vicinity damaging a Maruti Van bearing registration no MN01K-5773, Alto Car (MN07D-0651), Beat Car registration number A/F, and a Honda Activa MN01B-6022.

After the police team at the spot failed to control  the mob, police reinforcement from Thoubal police and 40th Assam Rifles were called in.

The mob was subsided only after the Board officials were moved out of the place.
