Raids on liquor shops ahead of polls

IMPHAL, March 30: The state Excise department has carried out raids on 232 liquor shops and vendors in the state and arrested 165 individuals, following strict instruction from the state Chief Election Officer after the announcement of the Election Code of Conduct for the 16th Lok Sabha Election, said assistant commissioner, Excise K Joykumar today.

The state Excise department today disposed-off a large number of Indian Made Foreign Liqour bottles worth around Rs one lakh and Rs 21,500 worth of local liquor seized by the Bishnupur police in the last couple of days.

This noon, the department disposed-off the liquor in the presence of media persons at the department’s head quarter.

There were 165 litres of IMLF including beer and 215 litres of local liquor, Joykumar told media persons at his office chamber today.

The IMFL bottles were seized by the Bishnupur distric police under the district’s SP N Herojit during the past few days and handed over to the department, whereas the local liquor were seized by Excise personnel during drives conducted in the past few days, he continued.

The department has also seized 4401 litres of IMFL and local liquor during the recent drives, he said.

A total of Rs 2,11,150 has also been collected during the drive, he asserted.
