Congress MLA alleges NCP workers of assaulting cousin

IMPHAL, April 20: Even as the election to the 16th Manipur parliamentary election is over, post poll violence persists unabated. A cousin brother of the sitting MLA of Wabgai (Congress) Md Fazur Rahim, has been allegedly assaulted by suspected workers of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) late last night around 11 pm.

The report comes barely a day after another allegation from Congress that a worker was assaulted by CPI workers in the same constituency, Mayang Imphal.

The victim is identified as one Md Abdul Latif, 48 years, son of Md Nizamuddin of Irong Chesaba Mayai Leikai.

Speaking to IFP over the phone, the Wabagai MLA revealed that around 7pm individuals suspected to be NCP workers waylaid the victim while he was returning home.

After having intercepted on the way the victim was taken to a place about half a kilometre away from his residence at Mayang Imphal Meinam Leirak area and assaulted Latif severely, alleged the MLA.

The perpetrators reportedly used sticks and other blunt objects with an intention to inflict serious injuries, asserted the MLA adding that Latif sustained external injuries including head, buttock and arm etc.

Latif was first rushed to RIMS and later shifted to Raj Poly clinic, he said.

The MLA further informed that a case has been lodged with the Mayang Imphal police station against Md Habib (main suspect) and his accomplices.

When enquired the possible reason behind the assault, the MLA maintained that Md Abdul Latif was assaulted on the charges of favouring the Congress candidate during the just concluded II-Manipur parliamentary constituency election.

Meanwhile, the officials of the Manipur police department including the Mayang Imphal Police station, declined to comment on the matter.
