IMPHAL, May 7: The Women Action for Development (WAD) condemned the brutal killing of a 7 year old girl named Simaran, daughter of Md Doctor of Moijingkhong Manung of Thoubal district who went missing since May 5 and was found murdered on 6 May.

Crimes against women and children in the state are a big concern. Despite various efforts by civil society organizations, such crimes are escalating. The trend of committing such crimes has been witnessed in recent days; cases of cold-blooded murders, cyber crimes, high rates of domestic violence as an impact of drug abuse etc, says the press statement from WAD.

It is also mentioned that most of the victims belonged to poor family while the recent trends of cold blooded murders are committed by drug abusers. Crimes reported from the Muslim community has gained a record high in recent days. Minors from Children Home are increasingly becoming a target of some Insurgent groups to extort money and are often exposed to arms as enticement to child soldiering which is a violation of child rights and Geneva Conventions, it said.

In the last four months, as many as 68 cases of various forms of crimes against women and children have been reported. Among them, there are 15 murder cases, 16 rape cases of which 6 are gang rape, 9 assault cases, 3 cyber crime, 9 suicide cases, 2 molest cases, child trafficking 7 cases etc.

As per district-wise analysis, 25 cases in Imphal West, 17 cases in Imphal East, 17 cases in Thoubal, 7 cases in Bishnupur, 3 cases in CCpur, 3 cases in Chandel, 1 case in Senapati, 1 cases in Ukhrul and 7 cases occurred outside Manipur.

The Police station experiencing the cases are as follows: 6 cases in Thoubal PS, 4 cases in Irilbung PS, 3 cases in Moirang PS, 7 cases in Heingang PS, 3 cases in Kakching PS, 3 cases in Lamphel PS and 2 cases in Singjamei PS, it said.

The system is deeply corroded and thus people lost faith in the judiciary system as well as investigation system thus conducted the illegitimate mob trial and justice resulting in negative outcomes and prospects. Many arrested for crimes against women and children are yet to be charge-sheeted delaying justice. Lack of proper investigation system and modernization measures lead to an increase in number of pending cases related to crimes against women and children thereby escalating crime rates in the State. Lack of follow-ups by the media against various reported cases of crimes is also another factor, it said.
