ILP bandh cripples valley districts

IMPHAL, July 26: The 18-hour bandh called by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System demanding implementation of the system in the State and decrying police excesses against students crippled normal life in the four valley districts, today.

Bandh supporters were seen coming out at various locations and imposing the bandh.

Several localities also witnessed tyres being burnt and blocked roads, as supporters shout slogans demanding implementation of the ILP.

Police also fired tear gas shells to control bandh supporters at Singjamei Chingamakha Model Club.

Today’s bandh, which was acompanied by sit in protest and road blocks at several locations were total at many places including Sekmai, Nambol, Kongpal, Bamol Leikai, Nagamapal, Singjamei, Uripok line etc.

Shops, inter district transport system in all four valley districts came to a halting stop supporting the agitation.

Security forces were also deployed at every corner to suppress excessive form of agitation.

Our Thoubal Correspondent adds: Life in the district was also affected by the 18 hour bandh.

Dandh supporters were seen imposing road blocks at different parts of district-Kiyam, Haokha, Okram, Thoubal Wangmataba, Thoubal Bazar, Kshetri Leikai Yairipok, Khangabok, Wangjing, Sugnu, Langmeidong, Wabagai and Kakching.

Tyres were burnt and tree branches were used to block roads.

All shops of Thoubal Bazar, Yairipok and Kakching remained closed for the day.

The otherwise bustling with life, women markets also wore deserted looks.

Meanwhile, students of KM Blooming School, Khangabok and Khangabok High School took out a rally.

Police fired several tear gas shells in Thoubal Wangmataba to control the agitators, however, there were no casualties.

At Thoubal Okram, the police held agitators and made them pick up the broken glass pieces from the road.

Our Bishnupur Correspondent adds: Bishnupur district was also hugely affected by the bandh.

During the bandh, some vegetable vendors were seen selling their wares at the Bishnupur bazar, however, bandh supporters came and threw away their vegetables.

The supporters also forced them to close down their vendors and blocked the road by burning tyres.

Around 10 am, the police came and controlled the agitators. Shops remained closed and the market deserted for the day. And all the shops of Keinou, Oinam and Kumbi Bazar were closed down.
