IMPHAL, Jan 19: Supporters of the 12 hour general strike imposed by Thangmeiband Kendra Development Organization (TAKDO) pelted stones at some women vendors near the Kasturi Bridge today.

The agitators threw stones from the Nagamapal side and the vendors had to run for safety carrying their wares. The incident occurred around noon today.

As police tried to assess the situation, a woman police was injured by a stone pelted by the strike supporters.

She is identified as Maisnam Aruna, a personnel of the 9th IRB and is presently under treatment at the Raj Medicity.

The police also retaliated with firing tear gas shells and mock bombs to control the situation.

In the resulting action, some bystanders were slightly affected by the gas while the agitators managed to flee from the scene.

The strike clamped by TAKDO caused severe inconveniences to traffic and residents of Imphal area as the roads from Nagamapal and Khuyathong stretch to the Assembly area were blocked by protestors. Some women came out in the streets and using bamboo poles and iron pipes halted traffic in the main roads.

School vans, buses, office goers and general traffic were greatly inconvenienced along roads passing in Thangmeiband areas.

However, the agitation could not affect the women vendors at Ima Keithel area.

There was brisk business and women stood guard with sticks for any attack which may occur from TAKDO women volunteers. It may be mentioned that a skirmish in the said area occurred yesterday resulting in injuries on both sides.

Besides the commuting problems and the bazaar community closing down, the TAKDO strike ended at 5 pm today without any untoward incidents to the public.
