Government polytechnic students call off agitation

IMPHAL, February 2: The students’ agitation of the Government Polytechnic, Takyel led by the institute’s students’ union has been called off today following an assurance from the Education minister Moirangthem Okendro, to develop the infrastructures of the institute that is in deplorable state.

In this regard a meeting will be held on February 3 along with the minster, concerned commissioner and representatives of the Government Polytechnic Students’ Union.

The minister gave his assurance during his visit to the institute situated at Takeyelpat Imphal West district today.

During the visit the minister conducted an inspection of the campus.

After witnessing several blocks of the institution the minster dismayed with the deplorable condition, directed the authorities to look into the matter seriously besides assuring to start up developmental work in the institution at the earliest.

Okendro also directed the authorities to improve the quality of mess provided in the said institute as an immediate measure.

He told media persons at the campus flanked by the commissioner, that special attention will be given to the institute before urging the students to understand the government position in term of financial shortage.

Pointing out that around 480 institutions in Manipur have been damaged by the recent earthquake, the govenment is nevertheless putting its best effort and resources to restore them, the Minister maintained.

The minister also claimed to have no knowledge about the issue until the appeal were made by the union to the authorities.

General secretary of Government Polytechnic Students’ Union, Asem Prem Meitei appreciated the minister’s initiative.

However, he divulged that the union is likely to take up stronger agitation on the failure to meet their demands and on the failure to bring any understanding in the proposed meeting with the concerned authorities.
